The only bad thing about the new 'Murder By Chocolate:A Violet Carlyle Mystery' book is ... It was over too soon!I have read and enjoyed every Violet Carlyle book so far. Number 12 in the series was pretty darn perfect. Violet and Jack are going to the country for the birth of Violets twin brother Victors first child. Along for the ride are Denny and Lila, of course, and one annoying tag-a-long: Geoffrey- Violets half brother. Missiing their train puts the whole party on edge because they will be late for an all important dinner at Jack's wealthy grandfather's country house where Jack's entire family will be present. To try and rectify their tardiness to the dinner, and calm the fighting amongst Jack's family, Vi invites everyone to their country home where every type of chocolate dessert will be presented to his family, as a surprise. As the title of the book suggests, a murder by chocolate insues and Violet, Jack and a few friends help to snare the killer.If you are looking for fun reads, based in London, 1920's, with a diverse cast of characters who will keep you entertained- read each and every Violet Carlyle Historical Mystery books. They will take you to new countries, new cities in Britain, introduce you to new characters, share the most popular mixed drinks of that era, and take you on ridiculously expensive shopping trips. I find that I know the characters better as each story and book progresses. I would definitely start with book one in the series so you can get to know each character and watch them change and grow with every story. These are VERY easy fast reads that keep me entertained. I couldn't ask for much more... except for more Violet Carlyle Historical Mystery books!!!
What a delightful read! I gobbled it down like Denny does chocolate. I suppose over the next few days I'll only read it another 3 or 4 times, just to fully appreciate all the details. I've been reading English Between the Wars Country House Murders for probably 40 years, and I find this series extremely enjoyable.
Lady Violet and her husband Jack head for the country to meet Jack's family. Unfortunately, Violet's spoiled brother Gerald is foisted on them for the trip. On the train, Violet meets a woman with a plan to expand her chocolate business, who has been refused the money by the male bankers who don't believe a woman can run a business. Violet decides to check her business plan and her chocolate at a party for Jack's family, who have been fighting over who will inherit Jack's grandfather's business. When one of the heirs is murdered by chocolate at the party, Jack and Violet must solve the case before anyone else dies. Will Gerald ever grow up? Will the murderer be stopped? And will anyone get to enjoy the chocolate? Loved the book!
Back to a time when things were simpler, but not easier. Enjoyable easy reading. Love the characters, with all their different personalities. Oh and the fashion.
Witty, a real page-turner, very fun read.
